Without wasting too much paper, start with zero and begin writing the whole numbers from zero to 1000. Feel free to skip from about 20 up to 95 and then from 105 up to 995.
Question: What comes after 9?, after 99?, after 999?
Take few minutes, and think about how you would explain how to count from 0 to 1000 to someone who did not know how to do it. What are the patterns that you would look for and respond to?
